If you are anything like me, you have likely experienced the following scenario multiple times: In any small gathering of friends or extended family, it is almost inevitable that at some point news of the world or the current events of the day come up in conversation. Even years before I started my geopolitical analysis firm, people I knew turned to me for what they viewed as “the inside story” or “the real story” and to ask “why it matters.” My information and perspective were strikingly different, and often wildly divergent, from what they thought they knew, what they were being fed by the mainstream media both in Europe and in the United States (South Africa too, alas). Always, near the end of the conversation, I would be asked one of two questions: either “How do you know all of this?” or “Where do you get your information and what news site do you recommend?”
The answer to these questions was always the same: Naked Capitalism. It was my answer long before I had the honor of having my own work published on the site. It still is my answer. Other than through my decades of fieldwork and lived experience across the globe, which does provide a certain perspective and filter, I have no access to secret or inside information. I DO have access to Naked Capitalism and so do you. But it depends on your support to survive and better yet, to continue to thrive. So please go to the Tip Jar! Give generously to support the wealth of information, analysis, and pithy reader commentary on offer.
When pushed for more sites, and I always am, I still struggle and end up naming a few blogs and finally begin listing the various individual commentators whom I respect and follow (some of whom at times appear in the carefully curated pages Yves Smith and her Naked Capitalism team provide to the world). Nowhere else on the internet, or off it for that matter, have I yet found a source of equivalent value, of such consistent high-level information that matters, that explains the world as it is, that widens my perspective and helps me unlock and understand not only what is going on, but why and how.
Yves and her team do a masterful job in sorting through everything available and sharpening it to a manageable and digestible daily dose. I can assure you, a visit to Naked Capitalism is worth the time, every time. If you take the time to read any one of the articles, on any given day, it is nearly impossible not to learn something of value.
And if you read the Links compilation, not only are you treated to a bit of Yves’s sense of humor, you get a glimpse into just how much time and effort it must take to actually sort through the near infinity of the internet to provide readers with what is actually beneficial. Her work does not stop there. As an occasional contributor, I can attest to Yves’s involvement, her careful work, her thoughtful and respectful moderation of the comments. All of this takes time, and time costs money. Every donation helps, be it $10, $100, or $1,000. Go to the Tip Jar to help keep this remarkably lean team punching above its weight.
In a world in which, all too often, we are asked to spend more money for products which are declining in both quality and quantity, it is refreshing to note that a contribution to Naked Capitalism directly supports an endeavour which holds the line, which refuses to bend with the trends towards either shrinkflation or crapification, and day after day after day provides a unique high-value, one-stop-shop destination to enrich your life and your understanding of the world. This is a priceless service. Pause for a moment and think of all the things you waste money on, and all the things that are wildly overpriced for what they deliver. Then make the decision to contribute something, anything, to Naked Capitalism, here at the donation page. They need it and they earn it every single day. See you online; you know where.
