Lionel Messi has reflected on his latest World Cup milestone after becoming the highest goalscorer in men’s FIFA World Cup history, describing the achievement as “truly spectacular” while insisting there is still work to do.
The Argentina captain reached the landmark during his country’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, surpassing the previous all-time record. Despite the historic accomplishment, Messi admitted he was disappointed after missing an early penalty, saying it was one of the few negatives from an otherwise memorable night.
Messi said after the final whistle.
“It is truly spectacular, I am really angry about the penalty because I wanted to score it, but these things happen. The important thing is that we won, qualified, and kept improving as a team.”
On his record,

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also praised his teammates for their performance, stressing that the record belongs to the entire squad rather than to him alone. He emphasized that Argentina’s objective is to successfully defend the World Cup title, with every player fully committed to that mission.
Having led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, the 38-year-old continues to deliver on football’s biggest stage, proving that age has done little to diminish his influence on the team.
