France captain Kylian Mbappé has admitted that Les Bleus were simply not good enough after their 2-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-final.
Speaking after the match, Mbappé refused to make excuses and instead criticized France’s overall performance. He instead focused on how he and the rest of the team were poor despite the high hopes that they had going into the game against the European Champions.
“We didn’t play the match we wanted to play, tactically, technically or in terms of our overall level. When you don’t do what you’re supposed to do in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win.”
The Real Madrid forward praised Spain for sticking to their game plan and admitted France failed to disrupt their midfield.
“Spain stayed true to their identity. They like to control the ball and the tempo. We wanted to press them high and stop them from settling, but we couldn’t do it. We made too many technical mistakes and didn’t know how to hurt them.”
Mbappé also expressed his disappointment at missing out on a third consecutive World Cup final.
“Like everyone, there’s enormous disappointment. It was our dream to reach the final and make history for our country. Now we have to recover because football waits for no one.”
France will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff, while Spain advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final as both teams awiat the winner and loser of the game between England and Argentina.
