Her voice moved through the space with warmth and depth, drawing every listener into her world. Among them sat rapper A-Reece, quietly taking it all in. By the end of the set, he was in awe, later calling it some of the finest music he had ever experienced.

After the performance, Puoane shared a heartfelt note. She confessed she had not recognised the young man in the crowd at first. Now she did. She thanked A-Reece for coming and for embracing her sound, a moment that felt genuine and unforced. “I had no idea who this young man was. Now I know. Thank you so much for coming A-Reece. I’m so glad you enjoyed my type of music,” she wrote.

Puoane’s artistry has long been celebrated. A two-time South African Music Award winner and three-time South African Jazz Award recipient, she has built a reputation for blending jazz with spoken word in a way that feels both intimate and expansive. Her latest work, Wrapped In Rhythm, leans into that signature style, pairing original compositions with emotional storytelling. Though her career has flourished internationally from her base in Belgium, her roots in Atteridgeville and Mamelodi remain present in every note.

A-Reece, known for his introspective lyricism and commitment to his craft, did not arrive with fanfare. His presence alone spoke volumes. His praise carried even more weight, creating a rare bridge between generations and genres in South African music.

Inside the club, named in honour of Hugh Masekela, the atmosphere felt almost sacred. The glow of the lights, the hush of the audience, and Puoane’s rich voice created a moment where jazz improvisation and hip-hop sensibility seemed to meet effortlessly.
