Cape Town Inquest Into AKA’s Fiancée Anele Tembe’s Death Postponed

Proceedings were due to begin on Monday at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court, but could not get underway after an unavoidable medical emergency affected the court’s schedule. The matter has now been postponed to September 7, 8, 9, 15 and 16, 2026.

Tembe, who was 22 at the time of her death, died on April 11, 2021, after falling from the 10th floor of a Cape Town hotel. She had been staying at the hotel with her fiancé, award-winning rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes. The inquest is expected to hear testimony from six witnesses as the court examines the events leading up to her death and determines the facts surrounding the incident.

The National Prosecuting Authority previously announced in 2022 that no criminal prosecution would be pursued in relation to the matter. However, after Forbes was fatally shot outside a Durban restaurant in 2023, the case was referred for a formal inquest, a decision welcomed by the Tembe family as they continued their pursuit of answers.

For years, the family has maintained that they hope the legal process will provide clarity about what happened on that tragic day and finally address the questions that have remained unanswered since 2021.

The case has taken another significant turn ahead of the rescheduled hearings following the emergence of previously unseen text message exchanges that could become relevant during proceedings.

Among the messages is a reported conversation between Forbes and a lawyer representing the Tembe family following an earlier incident at Durban’s Hilton Hotel, where Tembe allegedly threatened to jump from a building.

Another exchange reportedly shows Tembe discussing previous suicide attempts and expressing fears that another attempt would be fatal. The newly surfaced messages have prompted fresh concerns from the Tembe family, who are now urging the National Prosecuting Authority to investigate what they believe are discrepancies between the contents of the messages and an affidavit previously submitted by the lawyer involved.

The case remains one of South Africa’s most closely watched legal matters, drawing widespread public attention because of its connection to AKA, whose successful music career and tragic death made headlines across the country.

With the inquest now set for September, the court is expected to revisit the evidence in detail as it seeks to establish exactly what happened in the final moments of Anele Tembe’s life. While the postponement extends the wait for answers, the upcoming hearings are expected to play a pivotal role in a case that continues to resonate with the public and both families involved.
