K.Keed and Orish Detail The Evolution Behind “Umgaranto II.” K.Keed and Orish are preparing to usher listeners back into the world of Umgaranto with a sequel they say is bigger, bolder and more intentional than its predecessor.

Set for release on July 24, 2026, Umgaranto II builds on the foundation laid by the duo’s 2023 project while placing isiXhosa storytelling, friendship and authentic kasi experiences firmly at the heart of its creative vision.

Speaking about the project with SA Hip Hop Mag, the pair explained that Umgaranto II was shaped almost entirely by their real-life experiences, allowing the music to develop naturally without sacrificing authenticity.

“The real-life experiences made it easy for the music to come naturally,” they said. “We just had to tap into the mode of storytelling and make it as fun as possible without losing the authenticity. Our experiences have been the driving force of the music.”

Rather than approaching the sequel as a correction of the first album, K.Keed and Orish viewed it as an opportunity to expand the Umgaranto universe. They describe the new project as an evolution that introduces fresh sounds, welcomes a new generation of Xhosa artists and celebrates South African pop culture.

While the original project spotlighted established Xhosa voices, Umgaranto II broadens its creative landscape by embracing newer artists. The duo also weaves tributes to South African cultural icons and legendary figures throughout the album, reinforcing its connection to local heritage.

Musically, the project reaches into more cinematic territory. According to the artists, the opening track is designed to feel like the beginning of a film, immediately immersing listeners in the world they have created. They also experimented with conversational interludes between songs, featuring casual dialogue between the two artists to strengthen the album’s narrative flow.

Their songwriting has also become more focused, with greater emphasis on documenting the Gugulethu experience from their own perspective.

Leading the rollout is “Abenam,” a high-energy single inspired by a true story from their lives. The song recounts an incident in which the duo found themselves being chased through the neighbourhood by an armed man after spending time with his girlfriend.

The track explores the consequences of making the wrong choices in the hood while capturing the adrenaline and unpredictability of youth.

For K.Keed and Orish, “Abenam” perfectly introduces the album because it reflects the excitement, humour and reality that define the Umgaranto series.

“It gives people a sneak peek of what to expect,” they explained. “It conveys the message of being youthful and dealing with circumstances of being in the hood and how those situations shape our experiences.”

The chemistry between the two artists continues to be one of the project’s defining strengths. Orish’s background in production, engineering, and songwriting allows him to transform creative ideas into polished records quickly. Keed focuses on crafting emotionally rich lyrics and shaping each song’s direction.

Together, they say their understanding of each other’s strengths has created an efficient creative process built on trust and shared vision.

That partnership has also matured significantly since the first Umgaranto. What started as an experimental collaboration has grown into an unbreakable creative bond, giving both artists the confidence to push boundaries and position themselves at the forefront of Xhosa rap.

“The first project was us testing the waters and building a foundation,” they reflected. “Now that foundation has become the anchor for this new project. The growth is showcased in our intention, creative freedom and courage.”

With release day approaching, both artists say they are eager for South Africans to hear the next chapter of the series. They hope listeners will recognise themselves in the stories, whether through songs like “Mpahla,” which celebrates South African fashion culture and the iconic clothing brands associated with growing up in the kasi, or through the many everyday references woven throughout the album.

Beyond the music itself, Umgaranto II carries a message about collaboration and unity. The duo believes collaborative projects offer a unique creative energy, allowing artists to challenge one another, exchange ideas and develop new artistic perspectives together.

Looking beyond South Africa, K.Keed and Orish hope the album introduces global audiences to a side of township life that is rarely seen.

“We’re introducing a landscape that the world has never seen before,” they said. “We want to bring a broader perspective on growing up emakasini. Even through the struggles, there’s always a getaway in different mediums of art to tell your story.”

With cinematic production, deeply personal storytelling and a renewed commitment to celebrating isiXhosa culture, Umgaranto II aims to be more than just a sequel. It is an ambitious expansion of the duo’s creative world and another chapter in their mission to tell South African stories on their own terms.
