The football world was left in a state of shock as Christian Eriksen caused widespread concern after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday.
The incident occurred in the second half of the match after Eriksen appeared to clutch his chest before falling to the ground. The medical staff rushed onto the pitch, while players from both teams formed a protective circle around him as treatment was administered.
The match was subsequently abandoned, with the Danish Football Association confirming that Eriksen was conscious and in stable condition. Reports indicate that he was taken to hospital for further evaluation after receiving treatment on the field.
The incident brought back memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Denmark’s UEFA Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021, from which he made a remarkable return to professional football.
On that occasion, he was clinically dead for several minutes before being successfully resuscitated by medical staff. He later received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and remarkably returned to professional football, going on to play for clubs including Manchester United and VfL Wolfsburg, while also continuing his international career with Denmark.
