A year 12 student has grabbed the wheel of a bus in an attempt to steer it to safety after the driver suffered a medical episode in Sydney today.
Students from Erskine Park High School were on their way back from a careers expo when the vehicle started to veer off the road about 1pm.
“We were driving across the sidewalk and then everyone started screaming, I wondered what was happening. The bus driver looked like he was passing out,” Kiah Heta said.
9News understands that when the bus started to veer off the road a year 12 student tried to grab the wheel, but it was too late.
The bus smashed into a tree, sending kids flying.
“When we made impact it was like, it was so full on, so unreal,” Levi Latu said.
Paramedics treated 41 students on the side of Erskine Park Road.
Ten students and a teacher were taken to various hospitals, all with minor injuries.
The bus driver, who suffered a medical episode, was in a critical condition.
The driver had been trapped inside the vehicle for a short time before emergency crews freed him from the wreckage.
He was taken to Westmead Hospital.
