Ivan Cleary to leave Penrith Panthers as NRL coach after 2027 season — live press conference

Daring to dream

I heard he’s coming to the Dragons!
Not really… Just nice to pretend to have some good news this season.

– Andrew (Not so mighty Red V)

I mean, if he’s looking for a challenge, I can’t think of a greater one.

What’s harder: winning four straight premierships or getting the Dragons into the top eight?

We await our stars

Ivan Cleary, Peter Graham and Matt Cameron aren’t far away.

The media scrum awaits with bated breath.

Curious timing

We’re in an interesting time in NRL history, with Penrith once again overwhelming premiership favourites a few months after missing the grand final for the first time since 2020.

A year and a bit after winning their fourth straight premiership, no-one would be surprised if they went back to back in ’26 and ’27.

But then things get mighty interesting.

2027 marks the arrival of Perth as the 18th NRL team, with the PNG Chiefs making it 19 the following season, just after Ivan and Nathan Cleary’s contracts end.

NB: Both teams have coaches (Mal Meninga for the Bears, Willie Peters for the Chiefs) but are looking for superstar player signings.

Ivan Cleary and son and halfback Nathan signed five-year extensions back in 2022, taking them through the 2027 season with Penrith.

The masterminds of the greatest dynasty ever seen in the NRL, both still in their primes, obviously any team would sell the farm to get one or both of them.

Speculation has been rife about both Clearys’ futures but we could be getting half an answer imminently.
