Dropped Test opener Jake Weatherald out of Sheffield Shield match with concussion



Jake Weatherald’s wretched run has continued, with the discarded Test opener forced out of the start of the domestic cricket season with concussion.

Weatherald was subbed out of South Australia’s opening game against Victoria at Junction Oval on Thursday, before the start of day two.

He crashed into the picket fence while chasing the ball on Wednesday during Victoria’s first innings.

Weatherald then faced only faced six balls at the end of day one before Victorian debutant Harry Hoekstra had him caught behind for a duck.

It is understood Weatherald had delayed symptoms, prompting the decision on Thursday morning to take him out of the game.

Matthew Gilkes took Weatherald’s place in the SA line-up.

Weatherald was dropped from the Test team in August after their shock first-Test loss to Bangladesh in Darwin.

Hoekstra also top-scored with 45 at number nine as Victoria rallied to reach 244 in their first innings.

South Australia resumed at 1-4 and were 5-185 approaching tea.

Opener Henry Hunt made 71 before David Moody bowled him in a crucial breakthrough for the fourth wicket.

Jake Lehmann was 52 not out and Hoekstra had continued his fine debut with three wickets.
