Nota Questions Touchline’s Mainstream Appeal: ‘He Doesn’t Have a Hit’ South African music executive and outspoken commentator Nota Baloyi has once again stirred debate within the local hip-hop community after sharing his views on rapper Touchline during a recent episode of the Music Pulse podcast.
During the discussion, Nota argued that despite Touchline‘s lyrical abilities and consistency in the rap scene, the artist has yet to produce a defining commercial hit capable of elevating him to mainstream stardom.
According to Nota, Touchline’s biggest challenge is not talent, but the inability to create music that resonates on a mass scale.
“Touchline will never blow up. Touchline just doesn’t have the gift of making hit music,” Nota said during the podcast. “He doesn’t have a hit song. In his career, he doesn’t have his ‘Roll Up’ like Emtee. In his career, he doesn’t have his ‘Mgani’ like A-Reece.”
Nota referenced landmark songs that played pivotal roles in the careers of some of South African hip-hop’s biggest names. Emtee’s breakthrough single Roll Up catapulted the rapper into national prominence, while A-Reece’s Mgani remains one of the most celebrated tracks in his catalogue.
The music executive suggested that Touchline lacks a comparable record capable of transcending his core fan base and reaching wider audiences.
The comments have already sparked discussion among hip-hop fans, with some agreeing that commercial success often hinges on the presence of a signature hit record. Others, however, argue that an artist’s legacy should not be measured solely by chart performance, pointing to Touchline’s respected lyricism, storytelling ability, and dedicated following.
Touchline has built a reputation as one of South African hip-hop’s most consistent lyricists, earning praise for his introspective writing and independent approach to music. While he may not boast a mainstream crossover anthem on the scale of Roll Up or Mgani, supporters believe his contribution to the culture extends beyond commercial metrics.
