Here are the top African players excluded by their countries from their final squad selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will showcase Africa’s strongest collection of talent yet, with several nations arriving in North America carrying genuine ambitions of making history. However, not every star will be on the plane. Injuries, tactical decisions, and fierce competition for places have left some of the continent’s biggest names watching from home.
From established internationals to AFCON heroes and fan favourites, these are the notable African players who will miss the 2026 World Cup despite seeing their countries qualify.
Ivory Coast
- Wilfried Zaha
- Jérémie Boga
- Willy Boly
Standby List
Wilfried Zaha is the headline omission for the Elephants. The former Crystal Palace star was left out of the main squad list, seemingly bringing an end to his World Cup dream. Jérémie Boga and experienced defender Willy Boly also miss out, while AFCON 2023 final hero Sébastien Haller was named only among the standby players despite scoring the winning goal in the final.
Ghana
- Mohammed Kudus
- André Ayew
- Joseph Paintsil
- Tariq Lamptey
- Alexander Djiku
Ghana’s list of absentees is arguably the most significant among Africa’s qualified nations. Mohammed Kudus misses the tournament after failing to recover from surgery on a quad injury. Veteran captain André Ayew was overlooked as coach Carlos Queiroz opted for a younger attack, while Joseph Paintsil’s omission has surprised many supporters. Defensively, Tariq Lamptey is sidelined with an ACL injury, and Alexander Djiku was ruled out after arriving at camp carrying an injury sustained during the Russian Cup final.
Morocco
One of the heroes of Morocco’s historic 2022 World Cup run, Youssef En-Nesyri, misses out on the final squad. His omission reflects the changing direction of the Atlas Lions under coach Mohamed Ouahbi, who has embraced a younger and more dynamic group ahead of the tournament.
Senegal
- Ilay Camara
- Moustapha Mbow
Unlike several of their African rivals, Senegal arrive at the World Cup with virtually all of their major stars available. Coach Pape Thiaw’s final cuts were limited to Ilay Camara and Moustapha Mbow as he reduced his squad from 28 to 26 players, leaving the Lions of Teranga with one of the strongest squads on the continent.
